Hi All,

I'm new to all this and am attempting to do a website for the other halfs small business. Does it matter where the site is physically hosted? to me it makes sense that if someone goes to Google.co.uk and clicks for UK results (as I usually do) they will not find me if I am hosted from the states. Is this the case?

I am in the UK btw and want to appear for searches here only as she is a book keeper so it would be totally irrelevant for anyone outside the UK.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

The place where you are hosted does not interfere for the search results, it only maters if you are listed in google or other search engines as a UK site, it will show 1st to UK users.

I disagree, IP location can be important for regional searches. Are you using a .co.uk domain or a .com?

I agree with you. If you target UK adudience, a .co.uk domain on a UK IP is the way to go.

Thanks folks,

I have just registered with 1&1.co.uk as they have servers in London, please don't tell me any horror stories about them !!!

It's a .co.uk url too so hopefully thats a good start for optimising the site.

Hi,

If your targetting the UK with the site you should host it in the UK for three reasons:

1) speed, it will load quicker than a site on a USA server
2) SEO, UK search engines like UK IP's
3) Safe Harbor, http://www.export.gov/safeharbor/
If your hosting data across the pond check the USA host needs is of the Safe Habor program.

Wish you good luck with the new host. The thing I can add is that it does not matter where are you gonna host your web site. Ther analysis say that more and more individuals and business in UK are looking for host outside the country... in US or continental EU because of the high prices in the domestic market.

Best Regards
D.

Im targeting UK and hosted in US. To be honest i cant really see any difference. Both SEO and traffic are the same.
