Rocketspike asked about unlimited data transfer and for some reason an answer came from praveen (a moderator) for unlimited bandwidth.

Don't you know there is a difference between the two? They apparently don't limit the amount of data transfer. I looked at the site (which looks fine) and they don't say one word about unlimited bandwidth! There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth, but if they probably don't meter the traffic or place a limit on how much traffic a site can transfer.

Actually, Malaysia has an advanced communications structure so you really shouldn't comment if you don't know. You lose credibility that way.

Elmo, hosting companies that offer unlimited transfer are normally unreliable. It is not feasible to offer such impossible plans.

Hi Elmo,

Unlimited data transfer is an impossibility as well, although theoretically, it is possible if they do not restrict data transfer in any way. However, most of these hosts have a clause in their TOS...something like "if you endanger server resources, your site will be deleted". Now this statement is open to wide interpretation. In fact, many of these "unlimited" hosts, delete users' accounts for using a mere 5 or 10 GB of transfer. They are unreliable, and they should never be trusted.

I agree with all these postings about unlimited transfer etc. It is always impossible. To me, though, it seems to be a bit of a mistake in wording:
Quote:
High Bandwidth - 10Mbps
Unlimited Monthly Data Transfer
Now, if this said:
High Bandwidth - 10Mbps
Unmetered Monthly Data Transfer

(unmetered instead of unlimited), I would be quite happy with that, as it is correct, possible and legal, its the bandwidth thats limited not the transfer. If this was the case I wouldn't have a problem with that provider (thats from a bandwidth/transfer point of view, there are certainly other things that would put me off (design etc.)

Just something which seems a little strange, though. Take the 1st dedicated server package. They give you 400Gb/month data transfer. They say this is a 64kbps link burstable to 128kbps. Now lets do a calculation:
64kbps = 8KBps
1 Day: 691200KB = 675MB
31 Days: 20.5GB
OK, so lets assume you burst your bandwidth for the whole month.... (thats not burst!)
You still only get 41GB in a month, so that means that to use your whole bandwidth you need around 1.2Mbps, which means:
Quote:
Additional Bandwidth 1024Kbps burstable 1536Kbps 320/mth
So you are adding an extra $320/month onto your cost to use the whole package.

And one other thing from that page:
Quote:
• 2 x 155mbps Internet Access node
Thats not really 2Gbps is it?

Your point is received, David, thank you for your calculations. I appreciate that you took the time to include these comments. I tend to agree with you on this when looking from a point of view of a very high traffic site.

It seems like for the average traffic site this would be a good plan though. The design issue...I suppose if they were advertising as web designers I would be more concerned about the design of their site. However the information on the site is good.
