Hello!

Newbie here.... I'm finishing my first website and have started to look for hosts. I've taken a look at this and other boards and did a search on google and boy am I clueless! There are so many options I really don't know which one is right for me. I designed my web site with FrontPage 2003 and it's quite small (7 pages with some pictures and some audio files...7 or 8, if I remember right). I really don't need much, but I want to find a good reliable and reasonable priced host.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance!

Juan

Before signing up for web hosting, make sure that your host supports FrontPage.

Most hosts do support frontpage. You can take a look at findmyhosting.com for some hosts.

Narrow your choice down to 2-3 hosts and then do as much research as you can on them. Try contacting them via their support desk and ask some basic questions to check for response time and knowledge. Make sure they have contact information on their site (postal address, phone etc) not just email.

Don't shop on price alone, web hosting is a business just like any other. If a host is offering you the world for $12/month. Walk the other way. The age old saying holds true... you get what you pay for.

Make sure there is a money back guaruntee, that way if you are unhappy you can move without much loss. And don't forget to read the terms of service of any host and if you have any questions, contact them about it.

All in all, if you feel uneasy about a host. Don't use them.

Good luck, and once you get a few hosts nailed down, feel free to ask about them here.

Pay with a card to make sure you can give yourself the refund (chargeback) if they refuse to refund you. (considering they have a no questions asked type of guarantee, of course) Why would they not refund you then? I don't know, but it did happen before.

Thanks so much guys! Very useful info. Ok, so I spent all day doing some research and came up with some options that look good to me. Let me know what you think:

midPhase.com
servage.net (this one looks really good)
startlogic.com
Lunarpages.com

Anybody has tried any of them?

All of the hosts you mentioned except LunarPages seem to be overselling their resources, meaning offering more than what they can actually provide without causing problems.

I'd check out Dan's (ldcdc in this thread) WHReviews.com.

Hello Marc, and thank you for the recommendation. Initially I didn't even realise that "webfreak" was you.

BTW, good luck with your (new I believe) vBulletin related service!

One Word Of Caution, Don't Go For Hosts With Unmetered Bandwidth. Unmetered Means That They Will Terminate Your Account When They Think You Use Too Much Bandwidth, So It All Depends On How The Webmaster Thinks. Not A Good Sign.

Oh, and also, LunarPages is definitely reliable, although I'm not sure about the cost.

a very good one that I use is Redz.us they're a small company and offer good prices. Their Tech Support is online almost all of the time. They never get in the way unless you do something illegal. So there Redz.us very good site.

They have a tricky process to go through when you need to upgrade the amount of disk space you need (for free). Besides the process, LunarPages prices are competitive.

Here's the disk space upgrade process for those who are interested:

Quote:
4.12 Shuttle accounts come pre established with 1,000 MB of storage. Voyager accounts come with 1,500 MB of storage. Enterprise accounts come with 2,000 MB storage. If requesting the additional storage offer at no additional charge, you agree that you must 1) be already utilizing 90% storage capacity with the files being stored directly utilized for the website 2) not be utilizing storage capacity for emails 3) must request the increase in writing to support@lunarpages.com and 4) agree to have storage increased in 500 MB increments up to the alloted maximum free storage offer. All requests for additional storage are subject to approval.
