I need some advice and what I need to do.

I'm getting 300mb of space, 8gb transfer for $4.99 per month. My problem is I've gone over that 300mb of space and need to either upgrade or find a new host, not sure which or how. If I upgrade I will get 1,000mb of space and 25gb of transfer for $14.99 per month.

I don't know much about hosting services. Also how hard is it to change host's, what would I need to do as far as transfering my site and domain over.

I appreciate any help.

Are you happy with your current host? If so, your best bet is to upgrade to a larger package with them.

If you wanted to change hosts, it's really not difficult at all if you take your time and plan it out. Your new host should be able to help you transfer your site to them with little or no downtime.

I agree completley. As much as I often would like a client to host with me if they're happy with their current host I recommend they continue. Like Anacrusis said it's not particularly difficult to move your site, though certainly some sites are going to be more difficult than others to move. Your new host should also be able to help with this if not do it completely for you.

Still unless you have some compelling reason to switch hosts like some added benefit with the new host or some unhappiness with the current host I'd recommend upgarding to the larger package.

I agree with the two posts above but I want to add a tip.

I got an 80% full warning on one of mine on Thursday. I said "NO way".

I checked it out and found that I have 45 MB of crap in my old stats folder. Yeh, I admit it I never deleted any of it. Just like my d*%$ closet.

Maybe this will buy you a little time. Anything older than 1 year is a complete waste of space and most of us can do with less.

Thanks for your replies. The reason I'm considering getting a new host is because there does seem to be more downtime than there should be. For example, right now my host seems to be down, you can't even visit the host's homepage. In the past there was a time when they where down for 3 straight days. They did seem to work hard on fixing the issue but I just don't like the downtime, period. I have a fairly descent amount of traffic coming through to my site at most times and right now I'm losing them. Does anyone else experience this "downtime" frequently, is this normal for all hosting companies?

Yup, I can't get to your sites, and http://alertra.com/spotcheck.php (checks if a site works from different parts of the world) can't get to them either.

If these downtimes are too frequent, I do think you have a reason to move.

To change hosts you don't have to transfer your domain. All you need to do is login at the domain registrar you use, and change the nameservers as insctructed by your new host. Of course, it is recommended you upload the sites (files and databases) to the new location prior to changing nameservers.

Well, if you're experiencing downtime quite often (every few days or so), that's just not reliable hosting. If your host's site is down for days straight that's not great either. What if you had a support issue, and could not get ahold of them? You might want to take a look around for other providers. That upgrade you mentioned for $14.99 a month should be very reliable hosting for the specs you mentioned.

Also it is not very hard to switch hosts. The hardest part would be exporting any mysql databases and uploading them to the new server, but it's pretty easy in phpmyadmin. Most control panels make the other stuff pretty easy. Good luck.

There are a lot of hosting providers. First, you need to search and find the host that is fitting on your site..
