I agree. The first warning sign should be the contract.

There are a lot of better, less expensive alternatives out there.

I buy domains from them and its reliable. I just don't use their hosting, and only because of access log issues and downtime - which are probably issues for most non-expert hosts! Big/mainstream is nonexpert (who makes better food - {a person at home/a small but GOOD restaurant} or {macdonalds/starbucks}... consider nutrition, not taste).

Stick to free hosting...You get what you pay for, and more.

Their shared webhosting are suitable for small business website as they provide limited brandwithy, storage and MYSQL. Also their hosting plan suport linux and windows operating system.It's a not bad choice to buy 1and1 for their very good service.

One time I tried to inquire them on web hosting via live chat during Christmas days, to my surporise, the watchkeeper answered me quickly.

That is good suggestion. But I assume that such approach do not allow you to be serious about the web with your web based projects.

Hmm, All i can say is some of the comments here are obviously by people who dont have experience of what hosting should be like

I used 1 and 1 for about 4 or 5 days, and that was enough. Lets just say that I did not "walk away" from 1&1, I ran away. And I ran as fast as I could.

Definitely BAD. BAD customer support, BAD hosting services, SLOW control panel. Avoide them if you can...

1and1 offers a great domain and hosting site. Never experienced any downtime. Though their web-based email doesn't filter spam.

2) They do have downtime, I've had sparse times, but that is natural.
3) They have an e-mail filter, you just have to activate it. (Or forward all email to Gmail and let Google filter it.)

No one is perfect in this world.
No single hosting provider is the best.
All we need to do is to know our own requirement, our budget. Then do some searching and reading some review from other users before we go ahead to subscribe from a provider.

Well it is basically what you would expect from a big name web hosting company, horrible customer support, claims that you can get 4,000 gigs of bandwidth a month on a $5 hosting plan, but a cheap service. You get what you pay for

That is correct. But I suppose that everyone here is about one company and as you said that is good for exact kind of web sites to be used.
