Data transfer is also called bandwidth. It's normally calculated by the file sizes multiplied by how many times it was viewed.

Just to expand a bit. If your home page is 50kb after everything is included (html, images, etc) and I request that page once then the transfer was 50kb. When someone else comes to the page that's another 50kb transferred or 100kb total.

So it's basically a measure of all the data that's been sent over the course of time. For most sites it's not going to be an issue. Even if your page ai 100kb then you would be able to transfer that page 3,000,000 times before reaching your bandwidth limit. (I think I did that math right)

Bandwidth can become an issue when you have a lot of visitors or serve larger files like video.

Data transfer is the amount of data that you are allowed to deliver from your site in a given month. It is also called bandwidth.

Bandwidth and Data Transfer are not same although they are very closely related. Data transfer is all of the information transferred from your web site to your visitor's computer; Bandwidth on the other hand is the capacity for this transfer.

That's true that they aren't the same thing. The terms do seem to get interchanged a lot though. etech-martin is right in that the data transfer is the sum of all the information trasferred and the bandwidth is the capacity for making that trasfer. I think many web hosts though tend to use both terms to mean data-transfer even if it's not technically correct to do so.

Data transfer and Bandwidth are totally different things as other members are specified. However, many hosting companies, as well as in forums, they are mentioned as same thing, which basically means that, for 3GB limit, you can send 3000 MB of data from your web site.

For example, If 1MB file is downloaded 3000 times from your web site, 3GB data traffic is generated.
