what is the advantages of getting hosted and paying extra for a dedicated ip?

dedicated ip is for better security when useing things like ssl (Secure Sockets Layer) so then you can take Secure credit card payments on your website, there is more thing it can be used for but cant think of my head what thay are, but basicly you will only need one if your doing some thing that need better security,

As stated above, the main reason most people get a dedicated IP is for use with an SSL certificate. The average website owner will not need a dedicated IP.

A dedicated I.P. address is needed for anonymous FTP access or if you need something like SSL. Beyond that there really isn't a need.

It's also rumoured to have some form of search engine benefit, but I haven't seen this personally.

Also, if you're a web designer and need an anonymous IP to show clients stuff, it's a good thing to have (I have one for that reason.)
