I hear it's possible to use gmail on your own domain, havent looked any closer at it though.

Yeah google offers it.... that's just about all i know.

You'll need to setup your own mail server, or you could use a service such as everyone.net

Check out Squirrel Mail, it is an open source application that will allow your users to have their own email@yourdomain.com which they can easily check from your site.
