In April, I needed a free website to hold a couple photos from work for a technical discussion. I needed the site for about a week. I took a look at Freeservers.com and they looked like they'd work. I thought I picked the free service with advertising support. Unfortunately, I stupidly gave them a credit card number on a page that said that the basic service was free.
They charged me $99.95 (non-refundable) at a time when I was out of town, and just paying minimums on my zero percent card. I was unaware of the charge on my card, and what happened was that my minimum payments of $22 weren't high enough with the new $99.95 charge, and I lost my zero percent rate.
I called Freeservers.com and they gave me their cancellation phone number. However, the agreement clearly says that the charge is non-refundable. I'm a pretty intelligent Web user, but somehow they tricked me into buying a domain for ten years.
Moral of Story - Don't give out numbers, and things are seldom free.
Is there a Better Business Bureau for Web hosting that I can complain to?
