You usually get a good deal with commercial scripts but there are lots of cowboys out there selling rubbish. In the case of Cutenews it is well supported and a good product so I would say purchasing it is safe (if you want to have their branding removed).
The better developers usually have user forums which are worth looking for feedback, you can also ask for recommendations on this forum as well!
