average visitors per day * average page views per visitor * average page size * 30 days = data transfer needed monthly

Hard to say as it depends on too many unknown factors: article size (number of words), article format (HTML, PDF etc), number of submitted articles.

You should be fine starting out with about 100 MB space / 1000 MB bandwidth. It will be a long time before you get too many visitors if you're just starting out.

1000 MB bandwidth per month should be enough for an article website without heavy graphics.

You can always start with the basic available hosting plan and change to one that offers more webspace and bandwith when your site grows.

Yep. For an article website without too many pics, normally an account with 100m+ storage and 2G+ bandwidth is indeedly enough.

100 MB / 1000 MB seems too less, you may need 10 times both, atleast.
Now with most hosts overselling, you might get GBs of space/b.w. easily. Just pick a normal shared account!

I hope its just a typo and they meant 1000gb transfer not 1000mb.

I know of many sites that consume more than 1000MB (1gb) per day easily. Just consider if you had a zip file on there of say 10mb 100 downloads of it and you are through your limit for the month.

People over estimate bandwidth. Alot of people think they need more that what they actually do. Remember a web page is only 40-120k per load so if you have 1000 visitors a day (which is a challenge for any new web site) that would work out to be 40-120MB per day, times that by 30 and you have a rough monthly bandwidth estimate.

I would say that you need probably 5 GB bandwidth per month so it would be wise to find a hosting plan with 10-20GB (or bigger) which would allow for further growth.

Once again space is kind of not a problem for your site as most hosts these days have at least 200MB and your database would not come near that.

Good luck! Have fun building the site :-)

start with a basic plan. Upgrade when your site grows. No need to invest in hosting when you are starting and expect low volume of traffic in the beginning.

Well said, If you need more space or bandwidth just upgrade a plan (assuming your host allows this )

Thanks,
Matt

Most sites like an article site with text content based in my experience doesn't come near 500MB to start. You could probably safe to start with 200-300 MB space and scale up as you grow. Be sure your host can scale your requirements up easily without switching servers.

As for bandwidth, most doesn't even reach 5GB a month unless you have heavy graphics per page and really really busy site.

So a 200MB with 5GB to start with is most advisable. Then grow your capacity as your online requirements grow. You should track this with website stats like AWstats in your control panel so you know what you are up to.

Hope this helps.

If you will need 1000GB (1TB) of bandiwith.
You must need a dedicated server

Visit www.theplanet.com
www.ev1servers.net
www.rackspace.com
www.1and1.com
www.sagonet.com

I recommend you THE PLANET they are the best
they guarantee 100.0% SLA UPTIME and they
give it to you !

I am client ot THE PLANET EV1SERVERS and 1and1.
The Planet are the best of these 3.

2nd is ev1servers.net

If you have the money for buyng a dedicated server
somewhere in Europe, in Europe the position is best !
I recommend United Kingdom the best place for server or co-location.

If you're in the US I would strongly recommend against getting a dedicated or colo'ed server in Europe. The majority of European datacenters get bad routing to the rest of the world, and bandwidth is outrageously priced there.

All major hosting companies will provide you with enough web space and free bandwidth included in the basic hosting plan, so don't worry about it, you will not go above ten bucks a month. The main traffic for article site will go from google, and you will not get listed there instantly, so if your site get really popular you will upgrade later.
