Do you keep track of your uptime?

Hi,

I am trying to get a picture of how webmasters keep track of their web site uptime and if their site is working or not. I would like to make a poll with some alternatives to get your feedback. Take a look below and see if there are any alternatives missing that should be included.

Although the question is serious I tried to make the alternatives kind of funny. When the alternatives are done I will post the poll.

Please let me know if this kind of thread belongs in another forum or isn't accepted here.

1. I don't have a web site, just call myself a webmaster.

2. I don't have anything critical on my site like adverts or e-commerce so I don't care if it is down sometimes.

3. I make lots of money on my site, but I have no clue when it's down.

4. My customers/visitors usually let's me know if my site has troubles.

5. I expect my host to handle that kind of stuff, I just hope it works.

6. I monitor my site and call my host/admin the second it goes down.

7. My host offers monitoring which I use.

8. Free hosting doesn't come with any guarantees...

Thanks in advance.

9. I use an offsite monitoring program (such as Alertra).

10. I wrote a script that sends a message once every hour on the hour to my pager to let me know that everything is okay.

11. What's uptime? (I've heard this before.)

12. The Internet doesn't go down. It's a 24/7 information superhighway with a scalable and robust infrastructure designed to meet the ever-changing paradigms of a global marketplace.

(Come on, you need some corporate BS or some people won't have a poll option to pick!)

Hi Adam and thanks for the feedback.

I guess you're right I have to include some "corporate BS" and keep it simple.

I guess your number 9 is kind of like my no 6. But you got a important aspect included which I had forgot to mention, to monitor from the outside from different locations.

11 and 12 I have heard before... and should be included.

I will review my alternatives and add yours also.

Updated options list:

1. I don't have a web site.

2. I don't care about uptime of my site.

3. I have no clue when my site is down.

4. My customers/visitors usually let's me know if my site has trouble.

5. I expect my host to handle that kind of stuff.

6. I monitor my site using a external monitoring service.

7. I monitor using a internal application/script.

8. My host offers monitoring which I use.

9. What's uptime?

10. The Internet and/or my server doesn't go down.

Please comment these alternatives if something should be added/removed or changed. Are there too many? Otherwise I will post the poll.
