What capacity do I need?

I need help please.

The activity on my web site is currently:
Sessions/visitors per day: 2,000-2,500
Pageviews per day: 15,000
Bytes transferred per day 270 MB
Disk space used is about 900 MB

My web site is a community web site with an active forum/message board with about 20,000 posts.
Usually within a 90 minute span there are about 100 to 150 forum visitors. High was 226.

Currently I am getting a MySQL error of too many connections, or a 504 time out error. I use Verio as my host and I have their top shared hosting plan. Their tech support is suggesting I switch to a VPS to combat this issue.

If it helps I use UBB Threads 6.5.4.

Web Site: www.allenonline.com

Thanks,
Ivan

Nice looking site.

It is the forums that are killing you. For that many connections I fear no shared hosting plan is going to solve your problems. VPS is most likely what you will have to do.

You really don't need a lot of space and the BW isn't that high if I did the math right. I wish I could tell you how many a vps can handle. I can't.

You may want to shop around and see what is out there. I would focus my pre-purchase questions on the peak capacity of the vps connection and the DB connections issue. You are really only looking at a VPS for the peak demand issue of both.

Not sure I was much help but I tried.

I agree with colbyt. I think a virtual private server or a dedicated server is going to be the way to go. It's going to be more expensive, but you probably have enough traffic to be able to monetize it and pay for the server costs.

I'm not sure if you're opposed to it, but I would think even adding AdSense to the forum would be enough. I see other advertising on the site so I'm thinking you won't mind. If forum members object you could simply explain to them you added the extra advertising to offset the costs of the new server. I would imagine most people would accept that for the improved performance.
