This question might be too general. What is the preferred hosting method, Unix or Windows? What is better PHP/Perl or ASP programming?

I'm managing a web site project on the side and I'm conducting research on which technologies to implement.

Do you have any links on comparisons on the two?

Thanks!

I suggest you search google for a comparison. I use php/mysql and I am very happy. Please note that if you are on a budget you should definately go with php/mysql

Hi there,
I feel , Linux and or Unix are stable operating systems but do not go along well with MS products. For ASP programming, Windows is the best.

ASP is a lot slower than it's counterpart PHP though.

Plus, if you 'really' want to run ASP, you 'can' do that on Linux, it just runs slow....er than usual.

If you want really affordable web hosting - you should choose Linux/Unix instead of Windows, as as usual it is cheaper and as for me - more stable.

You can run chillisoft ASP on a linux box but if you want true ASP you will need a windoze server.

I am biased but I prefer linux, very stable and great performance.

I agree, too. I'm using Redhat servers and they're all wonderful, mysql and php and not only free and well supported throughout the web, but they do work faster than their microsoft counterparts. Also, unix/linux being as stable and secure as they are, and microsoft, and let's be fair to them, leaving security holes in their os big enough to fling a cat through. (i mean a snowcat, not a hosuecat) Another example... just look at this fine message board.... no stinky asp here.
