Hey all,

I am a new web designer and i really don't know how to publish a site? What is the process behind it? I mean, I have posted sites on geocities but I have yet used a real domain.

I have created a websites for a personal client of mine and I now need to post this online. After obtaining the domain name, what do i do? I am currently looking at godaddy.com but not quite sure what im looking for.

can someone give me some guidelines and let me know the overal process... step by step.

thanks,

jason

Not much to it, really.

First, you get the domain name itself. GoDaddy is a good choice that way.

You set up a hosting account for your client with the minimum specs in mind (storage space for the site, email accounts, any additional features, etc.)

At this point, you'll get two DNS (Domain Name Servers) servers that you'll use to modify your domain name with. These are the servers that point your domain name to the server your site is hosted on.

After that, all you need is a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program to upload the site with. Check out the one at www.smartftp.com . It's not bad for a beginner and the price (FREEEEEEEE!) is right.

I think www.esmartstart.com is a n00b friendly FREE hosting site. Anyway, I started off with Geocities and esmartstart. Now I'm dealing a little more advanced stuff like cpanel, phpmyadmin etc. Its not really advanced but for me it was bcuz I started off at the age of 12. :-)

I have sent you a pm with a link to a site of mine where I try to answer most of those questions.

Adam has already given you a very good head start on the basics.

Surely for the noobs it's better to start your business from the free hostiung because you learn much from it paying nothing. And this experience is very precious.

hello,
For FTP, you can use FileZill. Its a free FTP client, and supported by all web servers. As far as hosting is concerned, try to get one with email spam protection, and anti-virus protestion. Few that provide email spam protection are yahoo.com and pair.com
Good luck!

Something strange has happened. I have obtained a domain and hosting account from godaddy.com. The first time i uploaded all the files through an ftp program (smartftp), and it worked fine but i had to make some adjusments in my css file. I then uploaded again and it didnt work. When I visit the site, it prompts a message asking for a user name and password and also the css file no longer applies to the site.

I called godaddy and they told me that this is a scripting problem on my part. I told them that that wasnt the issue because i haven't even learned any scripting,... all i know is basic HTML and CSS so it can't be that issue.

What is goiin on here?

it was the actual site. It's really strange and I'm not sure what went wrong. In any case, I removed all the files and uploaded them again and it works now.
