Hi folks, I need some input. We've just been told that we must give up our in-house hosting of about 60 web sites and find OUTSIDE hosting .

We absolutely MUST have Windows 2003, .Net, and SQL Server 2005. Dedicated would be ideal if we can find it for a reasonable price. There is no moving anything to a non-windows platform. We must have 100% reliability, plenty of bandwidth allowance and room for many domains and sub-domains. We have 60 sites now.. and there are 22 more sites on my desk to be designed !

The host must be in the US, and MUST be a reputable, well-established company, no fly-by-nights, we can't risk it. Servers have to be robust and well-maintained. We're talking about business mission-critical stuff here.

Suggestions ??

Well, the IT dept tells us it's costing about 50K /year to host our sites ourselves and the bulk of that is the hardware - servers, firewalls, routers, etc, and the cost of having the T1 line. We haven't been given a hard number, it just has to be a LOT less than 50K/yr. We will be billing back most of the cost. Some of the hosting options I've seen so far for a dedicated server with the things we need is looking like it'll be around 5-7K/yr.

Building websites for our physician practices is meant to be a service for them, and meant to be cheaper than them going to some outside design firm who will charge large fees and create sites that are not up to our company standards and legal requirements. So we want to keep the cost down as much as we can. If we can't do it cheaper than a 3rd party firm, there'd be no point in them using us to do their sites.

All depend.
I think you will start with dedicated or VPS.
I know some really good providers which provide that.
If you are going to start with VPS sollution I recomend you look at vpsland.com(helpfull support, modern solutions)
If you are going to start with dedicated servers I recomend ahosting.biz (quality, kindhearted support )
It's my opinion only.

If you are going to keep prices as low as possible, you won't find a reputable provider.

I would have to disagree with that, we've gotten a very good proposal from hosting.com. A dedicated server solution with all the things we need, 99.9% uptime guaranteed, 24/7 PHONE support (no email only nonsense), HIP security and other features for under $500/mo.

I know they offer .NET, and I think they're putting SQL Server 2005 on the new Windows 2K3 boxes.

They don't offer 24x7 phone support (it's 16 x 7, 10 AM - 2 AM EST), but they do offer...well...support. As in they actually will help you resolve an issue, and in some cases come up with things you won't even think of yourself.

I've been with them 4.5 years now, and I have no intention of moving.

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I was comparing the hosting rates posted here to the host I've been using for the past couple of years (netfirms.com), and I can't understand why they give so much more diskspace and bandwidth with their plans.

I mean, don't get me wrong; I like not having to worry about overage. And I understand that other features (like multiple e-mail accounts and multiple sites) could be a draw for the other hosts.

But for $4.95 a month I get 6 GB diskspace and 300 GB bandwidth from netfirms, whereas at crystaltech.com, for instance, I could only get 2 GB diskspace and 40 GB bandwidth.

Am I missing something here?
