I get alot of dataspace and space on my server. Heres the thing, it lets you have 50,000 files. What happens to the extra space once the file space is used up? I asked my host and they said that the server only allows 50,000 files. Is that on all hosts?

Not all hosts limit the amount of files, if you use your 50k files the spare space will just not be used. On the other hand you might upload 10k files and that uses all your space.

50k files is plenty enough for most sites though so unless you have a huge site you probably don't need to worry.

That is just another way to sell you gigabytes of space and terabytes of bandwidth and then prevent you from using what they oversold you.

Some hosters limit RAM. And I think that it is right way. I mean no overselling hosting companies.

Sorry to seem so dumb about this, but I had this host for 2 years and did not realize this. So files are like webpages you upload to the server and graphics?

Then with my host you be better off to buy 2 separate accounts then to upgrade. I think I will give them a email.

I doubt that you are anywhere close to the max.

Every script, image, directory, html page etc is considered a "file". If it has a name and shows in your file manager it is a "file".

The likely hood of you reaching this limit is pretty slim unless you have a site where you are constantly receiving uploads from others. This is just not the case with most websites and the file limits are imposed by some hosts to discourage those with sites that are considered questionable to begin with or to simply encourage them to upgrade to a plan or even dedicated server that would better suit their sites needs.

Good Luck!
