Do any of you know any links to sites that talk about how to set up your own server?

What would it take to do this and would it even be worth while?

Just curious...

I don't have a how to, but I do have some thoughts about different types of hosting that you may want to take a look at...

it should answer most of the questions you have about the benefits of a dedicated...

I was just getting ready to ask what type of server when I read Tiggy's article. Good article Tiggy! I don't know about how-to sites on servers, but there are a lot of reseller sites for virtual servers. What are you looking for?

Of course, if you got lots of money, I guess you can buy all the stuff and set it up in your basement. If you have that kind of money, can I apply for an IS job?

Well, I can't say that I have lots of money.

But, I was wondering what It would take to set up your own server at home. I think it would be a great learning experience and fun!

While I'm sure it can be fun to run your own server from home, there are a few issues that I don't discuss anywhere on my site about the problems (guess I should add an article about it to my hosting guide... whenever I get around to it!)

The main problem, assuming you have the technical knowledge to be able to get it set up, is the network connectivity. It's no good having a top of the range server if it is connected to the net via a 56Kb modem that you also use for your daily surfing... I know this is an unlikely scenario, but it demonstrates the problems with data transfer and reliability quite clearly.

To find out if it is possible to run a server from your home you'll need to check with your ISP... do they allow it? Is your upload speed high enough? How much data can you push up through the line each month? Is that enough (i.e. how much of the max will you be using and have you got enough to cope with the bursts of traffic)? And all this before even considering the type of software you will need and the sort of setup to protect your own files if you intend to share the servers connection with the net...

I know thats a lot of things to look out for, and if you can pull it off then it can be rewarding... Having said that tho, the most cost effective, stress free way of owning a site is to have another company deal with the technical side of the hosting.

I have been conversing with a guy that has a "warehouse" of servers and needs resellers for virtual servers. You would be the host or ISP for your clients using his servers. Cool arrangement since you don't deal directly with the tech and upkeep side of the servers.

I have a friend that has his own servers set up, hardware and all. I have asked him to become a member of this forum. Then he could answer, or not answer, from his background. We wouldn't use him too much.

Anyway, maybe someone has experience with it and hasn't spoke up yet. (?)

Hey Richme!

Welcome to the forums!

I will probably have some more questions for you shortly.

What software are you using?

if its a web server i would suggest not intergrating into network if its IIS there is securty issues that would arise
if it becomes comprimiesed so will your whole network
