Firestorm, do you happen to have a shell access on this server ?
In that case, try to run "top" from the commandline.
It will show you a list of processes, and the cpu % used, how many memory etc...
Shane, Google ads cannot slow down his server, as they are display in an iframe on the browser windows.There is nothing on the server, except a small bit of javascript.
There could be a bit more bandwith used by google to analyze the page content, but nothing that could bring a server to his knees.
The same goes for the site images.They are just images, it's not a images who will use cpu and ram. Especially if he links to them out of his server  ...
It could be a mysql query with an joint error running in background, or another app who don't run well over a long time.
They are many case that could cause a server to be slow, and no solution to handle it in all case. It's always a "try that" and "how is it now?" process.
