My server is always very slow , taking more than 40 seconds to load .. I have a dedicated server .. When i have looked at the Current Memory Usage in the WHM , i have the following below , is it something to do with the slowness? Do i have to increase the RAM ?

Current Memory Usage

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1035192 1009052 26140 0 53088 194240
-/+ buffers/cache: 761724 273468
Swap: 2040212 1524044 516168
Total: 3075404 2533096 542308

Thank you

Your memory usage seems to be ok. Does the server first hang and then give a fairly quick respond or does the page begin loading and hang at some point...or does it just keep loading but slowly? Furthermore...does it happen in all pages, or in pages with lots of database activity or lots of php to parse? What is your server load?

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but for me, those numbers don't look that good...

Have I troubles to read, or is there 1Go ram, 2Go swap, with 1,5 Go swap used!?

If there IS 1,5 Go swap, that's definitively too much.
It means your server takes many cpu and IO time swapping infos between memory and hdd.

You should not have more than a few megs used...
This is on my virtual server:
HTML Code:
~ $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2026 1869 156 0 280 873
-/+ buffers/cache: 716 1310
Swap: 1913 188 1725
I have 188 Mo swap used right now, and it's already much, on 1.9 Go available, with 2Go ram.

It does not look like a memory issue at first glance.

Can you show us the output of 'uptime'?

Your load average can help tell the tale, and uptime will show us that.
Best if you can do the uptime right after you've witnessed the slow down.

no... ur memory usage seem like at its peek. what service/process u running in the server? careful that some script that is buggy, might cause endless loop, unitl web service stopping the page request.

u might need to check y the usage peek to 1G+

I can't believe noone brought up what slows pages down alot of times and nothing wrong with the server or host. Check your pages make sure you don't link to other images on another server or you have google ads they slow down your site and sometimes they can slow it down alot at times. Also what about your site design maybe huge etc?

Firestorm, do you happen to have a shell access on this server ?

In that case, try to run "top" from the commandline.
It will show you a list of processes, and the cpu % used, how many memory etc...

Shane, Google ads cannot slow down his server, as they are display in an iframe on the browser windows. There is nothing on the server, except a small bit of javascript.
There could be a bit more bandwith used by google to analyze the page content, but nothing that could bring a server to his knees.

The same goes for the site images. They are just images, it's not a images who will use cpu and ram. Especially if he links to them out of his server ...
It could be a mysql query with an joint error running in background, or another app who don't run well over a long time.

They are many case that could cause a server to be slow, and no solution to handle it in all case. It's always a "try that" and "how is it now?" process.
