Finding a good hosting plan is not an easy task. You got to think of: space, bandwidth, support, customer testimonial, domain price, contract, etc. Here is a quick guide on helping you to find your best hosting plan:
1. Hosting Forums
Search through hosting review & offers section. After found the hosting, found some customer review posted at the forums as well. Personal referral is useful as well.
2. Search Engine
google, yahoo, msn will list major hosting company on top 20 result. View them one by one. Select at least 5 hosting for comparison.
3. Search for deals/offers
Search for hosting coupons, or hosting offers from forums or search engine.
4. Post request on forums
If you still cant find a good hosting, post a request at the forums, and there will be experienced webmaster give you a couple recommendation. I usually will give recommendation based on my experience with various hosting.
5. Still not know where to start??
here is a list of few hosting plan that you can start with & considering:
1) ixwebhosting

post on such forums as www.webhostingoffers.net, www.webhostingtalk.com, www.freewebspace.net/fourms as popular forums that you can find hosting on.
going to much sites above it a very bad idea, these are just big compaines that over sell all there servers and put to many clients onto the 1 server.
no web hosting company mentioned above will allow you even to use 10% off there resources. i have heard many first time users going here and there accounts being suspended becuase off the resources they use.
if you wish to find a good host and know that your website is safe and secure and being backed up every night pay that little extra and go to compaines like:
rackspace.co.uk
rackspace.com
hostingdepartmnet.net
kernow-webhosting.com
superhostingonline.co.uk
these are compaines that offer great support, 99.9 - 100% uptime. websites backed up every day. fast servers and execlent support.

scottm, I have to disagree with part of what you said. I've been in this business for quite a few years and know some folks at three of the companies listed above--and I find it very hard to believe they have ever suspended or terminated clients just for using 10% of the allocated resources within their plans. I bet there was more to it than that in most, if not all, of the cases.

Nobody seems to have mentioned dreamhost, which has similar or better storage bandwidth and price offerings, but has a huge advantage for me in unlimited domain/subdomain hosting. Great for internet marketing with multiple sites ...

different people have different need.
definately there will not be 1 host/plan that suite all people.
so, a big list of features + price comparison, is what i use most the time.

It’s not necessary that if a hosting company is big in the market it has to be good as there are lot of big players who get customers from their lucrative offers buy making promises which they fail to fulfill and the customers are left in multiple problems for which they don’t even get replies from the webhost.
If you are looking for a good webhost in all aspects check out the customer reviews on their forums and other forums as well and put up your queries in their “Pre-Sales” section on the forums of the webhost you are looking forward to go with and see how well they are able to respond for different problems, it will help you in getting a clearer picture.

i prefer host that offering huge space. Y? so that number customer account per server is getting less. I can host more websites. Basically, space & usage not come to my way.
i wont go for host that offering 500MB, and place 500-1000 people inside. thats driving the site too slow.
pay $5 get 100Gb or 1Gb.??? i will take the 100GB for sure.

Please update the hosting info as many data has changed.
For example, Hostmonster offering 200 GB storage.
