Hi,

I would like to know what is the difference between logs and statistics and who control them? Is it the site admin? Or the hosting company?

Can I delete logs and statistics for my site, if I'm hosting my site with a hosting company?

Thanks for contribution,

Hello,
Normally the logs are available with the hosting Co. and yourself, even if you delete the logs from your side they will be present with the hosting Co. As far as statistics are concerned you can have access to it from the control panel but I’m afraid if you can delete them as they are present from the date the site has been put up till it’s taken off.

Log are files where there are information about logging, web pages visited, etc
Statistics are methods or software that elaborates log files and show to you the result in an human readable way.

For example, a log is a file on a server where there are all information about your website traffic, a statistic is generated by a software like http://www.awstats.org/ that builds a chart.

Logs are the raw data. Statistics are the summary. Stats tell you 100 people visited your site today; logs tell you who all of them were ( or what their IP address is anyway ), when they visited, and so on.

Because most people don't have time to actually read their logs, web hosting companies give us statistics so we can see things in the aggregate.
