I use GoDaddy now for domain registration and hosting. I used 1 and 1 for 3 years with the free accounts that they gave away 3 years ago. GoDaddy recently updated and improved their admin and control pages. I ultimately had a decision to make with my expiring free 1 and 1 account. While 1 and 1 is a decent inexpensive hosting site, I consolidated all my domains on Godaddy. There are quirks with both providers.

I am exploring Google Apps for Your Domain to see if that would be a better hosting site and handling email. GoDaddy limits outbound messages on a daily basis, but this has never been an issue for me since I don't spam.

The CashParking on GoDaddy is not worth it. You have to pay a monthly fee to just park a bunch of domains. I am looking at the cash parking at Sedo. I like their layouts better and customizations. My only problem with Sedo is understanding what my cut is. With GoDaddy, they tell you up front and let you buy a higher percentage.

A friend of mine was looking for a simple host for a personal site, he went with godaddy and it has been fine for him. He did not like seeing that he could not have add on domains... dont know if they cannot be added or not.

never tried godaddy but 1&1 is the poorest webhost I have been with. Ok everything works until you got a problem..

So you phone support... Then u get put through to someone in some foreign land (after 30 minutes) and in turn either gives you information you already know (which doesnt solve your problem) or puts u on hold (for another 30 minutes by which time you have to hang up cos ur call is costing as much as your hosting plan).
An average email to the company can take anywhere between 3 days to a whole week.

Cancelling your account is another thing... You have to send them a snail mail of conformation of the cancellation (I mean in this day and age!)
6 Months after I cancelled my account I receieved a bill for the 6 months I didnt use.

My advise is to avoid 1&1 all together and visit http://www.webhostingjury.com/

I am with hostgator at the moment and their service and support is top noch.

I recommend www.qoozz.com , They are perfect, fast and reliable! Uptime is AMAZING!

Also, they have VERY cheap reseller plans.

These 2 are good for newbies. But if you want more control and advanced features try something else. Won't spam, so not posting anyone specific.

1and1 if either. GoDaddy are actually rip-off merchants - when you register a domain with GoDaddy, they register it to themselves and then lease it to you. They then have the right to take your domain back from you and if they like, sell it. And apparently they have been known to use this right.

I personally use http://www.greenlush.com

The less well-known ones are often the best
