Hello is it wise to buy domain name with the same company the hosting package is bought as so many companies are offering free domain name with their packages?
Or should these two features be bought seperatly?

Thx in advance!

Hi.

In most cases hosting company that offers free domain name with their service has higher price for the hosting package. In other words, domain name price is simply included into the hosting package price, so the "free" domain name is not actually free.
Also, you should check the TOS of such companies - very often there is the info that if you will have to cancel your hosting account - there is no refund for the domain name, so it would be wise if you will ask about the domain name price from the very beginning.

We would suggest you to buy the domain name separately from the hosting account. It doesn't mean that you will have to buy these from the separate companies - you can buy it from the one company, the only thing - it's recommended by us to buy domain name separately from the hosting package, so you will know for sure what you are paying for the domain name itself, how much will be your domain name renewal price, etc. And you will be sure that if you will have to change your hosting company or downgrade your hosting package etc. - there will be no problems with loosing/transferring or other problems with your domain name.

Of course it's our private opinion, and maybe someone else thinks in a different way.

Hope this info will be useful for you.

Well I bought my domain names separately, because I prefer to keep all my domains under one company and then change the nameservers to correspond with the hosting company.

Again as 2wdh said, its personal opinion!

It is usually wise to purchase the domain seperately so that if you decide to switch hosts their is no hassle with the host your leaving. Some companies however, will give you complete access to your domain name if you leave them so always check first.

What kind of hosting are you interested in? I'll give you a discounted offer. And if you want I'll register a domain name for you for only $10. Which is yours and would be in your complete control if you were ever to switch.

Let me know. Im open to negotation.

Thanks,
Jason

Yeah thats a good point thecodeman made about when you may want to switch hosts. some hosts can be fussy and can cause a great deal of hassle, so i would rather i be in control of my domain!

I also read somewhere that once upon a time there was a little tricky pratice by hosting companies which cinsted of registering domain names their clients paid for in the company's name so they were the actual owner of the name and not the client...

This is why i actually asked this question, is this practice still common among web hosts?

Well I don't know, but if they did do it, then I doubt they are openly going to tell people about it!
