I don't have anything against hostgator, it's just their affiliate ethics have been discussed a lot recently.

That's my understanding, and one reason why I've stayed pretty well clear of this thread (with the exception of my previous short post) as there's nothing to discuss (just advert after advert).

I believe that you were allowed to respond to direct requests for information about plans that are available that may suit needs etc. but otherwise self-promotion is a no-no.

I liked this policy as its a happy medium between blocking the OTT spam/advertising stuff, and not allowing hosts to blink Not sure if it's changed now though... perhaps someone could clarify?

Personally I try to be sensible about it as I'm here to contribute to the forum, not to gain customers. However, if it's relevant then I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to mention hosting services that my company provide - but only if relevant. I would hope that other providers could adopt the same approach so that we can all be sensible about this...

Normally I would tell you to base your decision off of your peer's reviews, but your best bet is to research other hosts and maybe even send them a support ticket to test out their support and find more out about their services.

I don't know if you work for a2hosting.com or what, but $24.95/month for a reseller plan (i.e. "shared hosting") is definitely expensive - you can get a managed VPS for less than that, and an unmanaged one for way less (either of which are generally a much better option since you can upgrade far more smoothly, and offer a much better branded service - i.e. with less branding or "white-label branding" from your provider).
