Hi,

I have a package with 1&1 with a domain and hosting package and a few weeks ago I bought another new package with another domain. So I have two now, but I have bought my own server and wondered how I cancel the hosting and just keep the domain names, as I don't know how to cancel the hosting and hang on to the domains.

If I have to delete the entire package, how long does it take for the domain names to become available again?

I look forward to any help you can provide

Contact their customer support, it should be easy to do so. NEVER delete the package without moving that domain name to another package first. There is a very high possibility that you will lose that domain name!!!

I'd transfer the domain registration to another provider. (Assuming you want to keep them for another year. Most registrar's add another year to your registration when you transfer to them.) It's been mentioned before, here and elsewhere, that using separate providers for registration and hosting is a better way to do it. I know the 'free' domain names from 1 and 1 is tempting, but it does limit your options should you want to change hosts.

It is a business tactic where free domain names are provided with the hosting service so that the customer gets locked with the service provider as well the charges of the so called free domain are covered from the customers hosting fees so in all nothing comes for free I guess.
