Hey,
My current hosting is ok but I am wanting to install the phpbookexchange script which he won't allow PEARL modules installed. (google the word and you'll see the project is at sourceforge)

I know I could change location of the pear module, and install new but I'd rather not deal with that.

I have a domain and need to be able to use Amazon_services and cache_lite and Mysqli, etc. If your company can provide hosting for this script for my school and at a reasonable price, sold. Thanks.

please pm me or reply.

Why not get a dedicated server? Youll then have the option to install any mods you want.

muhahaha o how I want to.... but that costs money that I don't want to spend... in future if my other website becomes successful then i definatly will tho (the bookexchange I feel is going to be very good as long as I advertise it enough around our schools)

I believe theres a way to install pearl and then add it as pearl directory in script, but I am not up to the challenge.

thanks for the suggestion though, hopefully I won't have a need to buy a whole dedicated server though.

Yeah VPS are basically a partitioned dedicated server. More like a smaller version of a dedicated. You can get reliable ones quit cheap these days.

Does it come with everything needed preinstalled or is it more per month to get the programs in there.thanks... i may actually get one of those 1/3 or 1/4 servers

You could look for a managed VPS. Then the host will maintain the OS and control panels / backups / security. A hosts definition of managed varies from each. You should enquire to what your host consideres a managed server.

If you need help installing an application a managed host should help you do this.

ok now I'm in a delimma and this will probably be last thing as I learned a lot this few days.

ok... don't laugh btw.

Which you think is better: 1&1 or Apollohosting for VPS server?

I'm leaning towards apollo even though its more expensive with less space and many fees... reason being it includes options for ecommerce. Ths website for the school is going to be awesome but I am also trying to do a webstore (reseller with dropship and a few small companies). I'm using joomla/virtuemart but with fee I can use the MIVA cart 5 with apollo which seems like better deal

Should this alone be the deciding factor to pay a little more each month? Thanks for any help.
-luper

ps: miva 5 is easily integreated with google checkout which is also a plus i think. Next week I'm making decision thanks for help guys.

bc i know you care... or not..

TAKE THAT VPS... i found a great hosting company that when I talked to said they could help and they installed script in like 5 minutes and installed php pear module too.... great guy

so instead of paying $30/mo im goign to pay their price of $30/year.... eventually i hope that I will be forced to get a ded/vps server but until then me and my small-fry self will stick to the shared. thanks

Stay away from 1and1.
30usd/month will get you a shared host, but not VPS, or at least not a good VPS.

You may be even able to find a host who has this script/software on their servers, otherwise they may even install it at your request. Otherwise, yeah i'd go with a VPS plan to ensure you get all the proper software you need. What companies are you considering?

You can get the apps you need installed on shared plan, the advantage over using is that you won't have any server management expenses, shared account from quality hosting provider allows to have successful ecommerce solutions. 1&1 and apollo both provide shared, I'll also mention the provider I'm with at the moment ahosting.biz, The price is reasonable, the support is responsive.

You crack me up charlesgan... As you can clearly see by the rest of his post, it was a typo and he meant PEAR!

Jeyce, reliable hosting actually comes in a VPS. True, you can get good performance, and good reliability from shared hosting - but a VPS is the way to go for any serious site where any downtime or issues will result in loss of income.

luper, I guess you may not be watching this thread anymore, but if you are - I'm a little dubious over the "ecommerce options" that you refer to since this is nothing more than a marketing ploy. Every hosting plan that is capable of SSL/TLS connections (i.e. virtually all) has ecommerce capability.

Even that may not be required if you're not collecting any sensitive information on your own server (many payment gateways have you redirect to their server instead for that step).

That said, I've heard more negative feedback regarding 1&1 than I care to mention - but I have no personal experience of them, so cannot make any definitive claims.

Decent VPS providers will offer a managed VPS which is basically as easy for you to use as a large shared plan. You benefit from increased control - usually including things like:
  • Rebooting your VPS via a control panel
  • Installing any script engines / frameworks etc. that you require (including specific versions that you may require), without any fear of these having to be updated for the sake of other clients, or for that matter kept on an old version for the sake of other clients - you should check what your managed VPS provider would want to charge you to install such things though... (if anything)
  • The ability to use the control panel of your choice
  • A guaranteed slice of server resources (although this is a pitfall as providers can easily oversell on this by overloading servers in the usual way that many providers try to do - including some big ones too)
As with any type of service (particularly hosting) - it's always a good idea to look around and consider your options. It costs nothing to enquire what each provider will offer, and it often helps to enter those discussions with an open mind.

Certainly beware of signing up to the first provider you come across without checking out everything about them (and the alternatives).

I would advice you to go for like what others suggested. It can be a VPS or a semi dedicated hosting package. It won’t cost you all that much but you are sure to get some good options along with it. ATB
