John is there a reason you specifically want to set this up on your own server? I think you'll find it's much easier and actually less expensive to lease a dedicated server.

Your ISP may not even let you run a server over your connection. Most generally don't.

It's certainly possible to do what you want, but you should have a good reason. Leasing space is usually the better option.

John, it sounds like you're basically talking about running virtual servers? (VPS's)?

If that's correct, I'd recommend that you take a look at Virtuozzo

There are other platforms too - e.g. VMware, Xen; you should investigate the differences (including pros/cons) for each platform before making your decision - but Virtuozzo (VZ) is widely accepted as the best option for hosting.

If you have other needs (e.g. development environment), VMware may be better suited.

As Steven said, it's generally far better to colocate in a well connected facility instead of trying to run a server from a residential/consumer 'net connection.

Better buy an VPS server with root access ...
from a hosting provider with software like PLESK, cPanel, Helm or other ...

If you have at least 10.0mbps or 100.0mbps business internet @ your home you must think about hosting some websites by yourself ... but you must do all the support of the server, internet peering problems (to call every time to the Internet Service Provider, to solve the problems) ...

Better buy an VPS for about 30-50$ for a month ... it will be much easier for you and you'll have at least the hole space and bandwith that you'll need.

VPS (Virtual Private Servers) are shared servers and are powered by 100.0mbps of guaranteed internet speed, also you'll have ROOT SSH Shell Access, unlimited hosting domains, control panel - cPanel/PLESK ... and others ...

Take a look @ www.1and1.com (USA) www.1and1.de (Germany)
for buying VPS. Or other cheap companies like www.aplus.net.

Also I can give you second advice to buy a reseller account.
See www.resellerzoom.com (with much space, bandwith and unlimited domains with cPanel) - SSH/Access is optional and it is require to subscribe, what will be the reason if you want to use it (becouse the companies are scared of DOS atacks and other problems like that) ...

Reseller Packages are something like the VPS server, but you don't have access to the root server by SSH ... Only you are using big space and bandwith from the shared server !

The leaders in the webhosting market are EV1 and THE PLANET, but they offer only dedicated servers that are much expensive ... (about 70-120$ for a month) with setup taxes ...
