I'd say that it depends on the hosting provider, but more importantly on the domain that you're registering.
For example, if you register a .uk domain (or other ccTLD's) then ICANN has nothing to do with it - therefore ICANN accredited registrar is not a factor.
With .uk domains in particular, you can always as Nominet (the .uk registry) to transfer your domain to some other registrar if you have problems getting this done in the first place.
Things to look out for with domain name registrations/transfers: - Is the domain registered to you instead of the hosting company etc.
- Is there a fee to release/transfer the domain
- Is the renewal charge the same as registration charge (or otherwise reasonable)
As both previous posters have said, you don't need to have your domain with your hosting provider. You just need to change the nameservers to the ones provided by your hosting provider; I'm pretty sure that UKReg do allow you to do this, but I'm not sure specifically what you need to click on.
My experiences with UKReg is that they don't have much automation in their system, and it can be slow to get support from them when needed. That's just my own experience though - others may have found different?
