I need shared hosting that will allow a blog & rss & decent bandwidth.
Storage is not that important.

I do not want a host that will shut me down if my blog starts getting
on the front page of some social bookmarking sites.

I'm offended! I think you missed one off your list?

Anyway... I agree that it would be unreasonable for any provider to "shut you down if my blog starts getting on the front page of some social bookmarking sites" - however, if they contact you and ask for you to upgrade that may be a reasonable request.

A lot of providers (potentially including some in that list) offer way more data transfer (commonly referred to as bandwidth, even though it is the incorrect terminology in most cases) than they can actually sustain. These are the companies that will either suspend your site, terminate your contract, or ask you to upgrade/move for using resources that are supposedly well within your limits.

You should look for a provider offering realistic allocations at fair prices, and you're far less likely to run into trouble.

Given that this issue is a concern of yours, it suggests you expect it to be a likely scenario, and therefore I would recommend that you make a point of clarifying exactly how each potential provider would react if this were to happen.

Oh yeah... and add at least one more provider to that list :P

Seriously, I hope the above helps you find what you're looking for in a provider, and remember to come back and share your experiences with us whoever you select.

well my friend a lot good hosting out there and yes one of them on the list, just keep searching before decided to join.

by the way to test them, send email 1-3 times and wait the reply, if they have god service and system you will always get reply and this is a good sign.

good luck

Worth noting that most hosting companies have separate sales and support teams, and therefore a fast/decent response to your sales query doesn't mean that you can expect similar service as a customer...

In our case, we tend to have this the "wrong" way around - i.e. sales stuff is usually handled slower. So our support is really good, but sales may take longer to respond etc. (depending on when you email). Basically - we put existing customers first.

Most hosting companies put their sales team first in order to capture sales successfully, but then support is either poor quality and/or slow to respond to your problems.

I think that you'll find it hard to actually test a host's responsiveness before signing up with them - although at least if you get good informative replies to your sales queries then you have half a chance... (i.e. at least you know there must be at least one person in the company who knows something!)

It's very unlikely that somebody has had experience with all of the mentioned hosts, you can try to make search on each host separately and contact them, later then eliminating one by one till you have a few left.
Also I'm sure before phoning make a very detailed list of the features each host offers in his plan, like cpanels, numbers of domains, subdomains, MySQLs, other additional features you may need SSL certificate, Shopping Cart... I'm sure it will help you make choice.

Hi, frankly speaking, I don't understand why you restrict your choice to these companies, let me also offer you some more companies to consider valuhost.com, polur.net, ihosty.com

Most of all I like Lunarpages from your list. Also have a look at hostgator.com, webhostingbuzz.com of Dreamhost.com. These are good companies to have a look or use.

I'd advise you to look at ahosting.biz and godaddy.com's package plans. They have nice prices and a responsive quality support.

I have a little webhost myself. We dont close anyone done for anything, except if your doing something illegal . We create each persons plans to suit your needs... so you start with a $30/yr plan and if you need more of something we edit your account. Saves getting a preset account that gives u a whole heap of crap that u dont want .

I want to keep it small at the moment so i dont have a huge fancy homepage, but the homepage can give you a quote or setup of a package.
www.hostingsquared.com.au

If your unsure i will give u a free week to test it out. if you want to talk to me about it im online at angus_930@msn.com and angus123mcdowell@yahoo.com.au and if you wanna email me angus.mcdowell@gmail.com

thanks

Dreamhost have their place, but there's a lot of mixed reviews about them - my impression seems to be that they're ok if you're looking for something cheap, but if you want something decent in terms of performance/reliability then you may want to try something else.

Likewise with GoDaddy - isn't what I've heard about them in terms of their support, but if you've had positive personal experience with them then you will know more about them than me.

Someone earlier raised the question of "why limit to just those hosts" etc. - I think the answer is very simple. In this thread alone there are probably over 20 different hosting companies mentioned... you can't possibly consider all of them in a meaningful way!

I would suggest the best way to find a suitable hosting provider (assuming absolutely no knowledge and prior experience on the matter) is:
  1. Figure out your needs in terms of features (PHP, MySQL, ASP, ASP.NET, Coldfusion, Java) etc. and in terms of (likely) diskspace / data transfer usage.
  2. Search forums, directories, search engines etc. to find potential hosts
  3. Talk (phone, email, live chat) to the sales teams at some of those hosting providers which appear as though they may be suitable
  4. Identify a short-list of two or three hosting providers and ask for opinions specifically for each one (perhaps independent threads in a forum context?) - also check out reviews etc. though, including searching for negative comments about said company via Google etc.

Based on the results of the above, chances are you'll find a decent host...

However, one very important point to note - different people have different requirements, expectations, and budgets for hosting services. When asking for opinions from others it can often help to provide some context of what you want the hosting for (e.g. business, or personal etc.) and your budget...
