EV1 (now part of The Planet) are in Texas, and aren't really known for providing decent connectivity.
If you want decent connectivity for UK visitors then you are best hosting in the UK - but don't let anyone tell you that you can't get good results for UK orientated sites that are hosted in the US: both sections of our website are currently hosted in the US (see sig.), which I hope you will find suitably quick
It's a bit difficult to say why your site is running slow - it really could be anything; consider: - Database queries / other code-related issues specific to your website
- Server load (and spec.!)
- Connectivity (local to the server, and your particular route across the pond)
They're the main points that come to mind.
Assuming it isn't about the code that you're running, there probably isn't much that you can do to influence it - having already spoken with your provider, if they're not interested in helping then I can only suggest one thing... (do I need to write it?)
You could go on trying to prove that your site is slow, but I don't feel that the owness should be on you? If you've reported a problem then they should help you identify the cause (even if they just need to show that it isn't something at their end).
When you say "slooowwww" - how slow are you talking about? Looking at your site (I'm based in the UK), it seems to connect up quite quick, but then takes a while to load all of the images.
I would suggest that it should be possible to optimise the design so that a number of those images aren't needed (i.e. the 'spacer' images) - that'll make it load quicker.
