Im going to attempt to build a site that my customer thinks will get millions of hits every hour do to all of the advertizing that they are going to do. Does anyone have any ideas of who we should use for hosting and why?

If you're going to get that many hits. I think the only real choice would be a dedicated server. It would cause too much strain on a shared one, even if you could find one with a lot of bandwidth.

Sounds like you will need a dedicated server also.
However I would question the person who told you "millions of hits every hour." Did he tell you what methods he will use to achieve this? As well it is almost impossible to get that many visitors in an hour (millions) unless you you spend millions in advertising. The search engines can only bring so much traffic to your site. I would be interested in seeing the website/company who told you they could do this?

I dont think he is getting millions of hits, but he wants to fool ppl into thinking he is and get them to pay him to host an Add on there site, thinking they will get some of the hits,

I might be wrong but these words tell me this

Cheif - I know you know this already (so I hope you put in the wrong word), but look back at what you wrote and repeat this mantra as many times as you need to...

"Web hits are not web visitors"

Tiggy,
Yes i know that unique visitors are not the same as hits. One page view could create several page hits in a log file.

However, I assumed that the person who told him "hits" meant "visitors" which is why I said that

Hi,

I agree with Chief. It is impossible for any website to get millions of visitors per hour, but it is possible for a website to get millions of hits per month (I'm estimating Yahoo! has at least that much). However, I seriously doubt that your customer will be making a site that can compete with Yahoo.

Anyway, if it seriously is going to get more than 100 visitors every hour, then I recommend getting a dedicated server, as Chief has pointed out. Any virtual host will not be able to provide you with an adequate transfer limit for such a site. You also must remember that Yahoo! has several dedicated servers to host their immensely popular and enormous website.

Just a little more information, you'd certainly need to do a LOT of advertising to get that level of hits. Someone I knew used to run the UK's (and possibly the world's) biggest snooker site. They had huge adverts at all the venues and many of the matches were televised. Even with this huge advertising they still only got a few million hits each month. They did have a dedicated server though.

If you'll get millions of hits every hour, I suggest load balanced dedicated servers, other than that, you'll be slashdoted and your host will hate you
