Hi im not sure if anyone can help me but last year i had someone create a website for my company and is now nowhere to be found the problem is i dont know what host provider he used and i need to update my website. i have down a whois query but this only tells me where i got my domain name IP address etc.. it says my server is websitewelcome.com i dont know what that means but that site is inactive so if anyone can help me figure out what company i used to host with it would be verry helpful. I need the files from it to update cause not only did he not leave me with any info on my website but he did all the work on his computer so i dont have the files to just host somewhere else without having to redo the whole thing which can be difficult for me. I would be grateful for any comments or help you might have.

Then your provider is/was a reseller of Hostgator.com. Given the particularity of the situation though, it will be very hard, if not impossible, to get access without a court order. You are, from a legal point of view, a third party, with no right to access a Hostgator customer's (your designer) data/account.
