I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum for this question, but here goes.

I'm trying to setup a testing server on my local machine to test ASP pages that I'm building in Dreamweaver (don't know if this is relevant?). I have no knowledge of IIS or ASP. I am trying to learn ASP from a book at the moment, but can't test the scripts because I can't get the bloody thing to work.

Does anyone have a decent quickstart/setup guide that they can post or direct me to? I also have XAMPP installed for testing php localy. This works fine. Do they conflict? Can I use IIS to test both? I have disabled the services in XAMPP(Apache & MySql), but still no joy. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes they will conflict, unless you reconfigure one of the servers to use a different port.

I use Apache on 8080 and leave IIS on 80

Yes you can have PHP on IIS Just DON'T try and install PHP 5.2.x 'cos you will be pulling your hair out in large clumps.
And MySql can be used with ASP if you install the MySql ODBC drivers.

When I go to command prompt I get the below error message.

Also, how do I set the XAMPP port to 8080. Is it just a case of changing all instances of 80 to 8080 in the 'httpd.conf' file? I know I might sound a bit thick, but I have no experience in this area. I would like to get IIS working before I try and set up Apache and MySql.

Yep, and there is only one instance that matters

did IIS install using the "Add/Remove Programs". You do need to be running XP Pro NOT Home

I changed two instances, Listen 8080 & ServerName localhost:8080. Will this still work?

I'm running XP Pro and I did install from "Add/Remove Programs". I've just uninstalled it and am about to install again. I thought it would be an easy process, but nothing's easy when I'm doing it!

In my 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework' folder I've got a few folders begining with v;

v1.0.3705
v1.1.4322
v2.0.50727
v3.0
v3.5

Is this how it should be? When I run the DOS prompt should I type the latest version (v3.5) in the command instead of v1.1.4322. Or is that for something completely different?

I got it working!

I installed the v2.0.50727 file. Seems to have worked. I also think the Authentication Methods may have been causing a problem. But it appears to be working fine now.

I think most IIS servers tend to run the 2.0 version.

Windows 2003 Server and previous versions will not install the 2.0 framework auto if that is what is being asked.

1.1 will be installed but you will need to select "enable .net" in order for the page s to render the code.

I'm running 2003/IIS 6.0 - 1.1 and 2.0 framework for developers, I would not install the 3.0 framework if your not utilizing it.

btw...I have a another box running wink server, IIS 5.0, php and mysql..I cant believe how smooth the sucker is parsing right now!
