or something's going on! I was trying to do a simple rewrite and I couldn't get it to go.. the thing is, whatever I put in my .htacccess it doesn't matter- I even deleted the file and replaced it with a blank .htaccess, I restarted the web server, I disabled the rewrite mod... and STILL it acts as if it's being told some rules...

for example, the link is "states.php" and it will go to "state.html" every time even with no .htaccess file. help anyone?? Frustrated here

Could you link us to the webpage? In some cases the cache may be playing a role here.

Also, it is possible that another file of yours is forwarding the actual URL, such as a script built around MOD Rewrite functionality.

edit: Okay after testing on different browsers I've determined it's simple caching by Firefox that was the culprit.
