I have a 512MB VPS right now but I just bought the parts to build my own server. Its a
AMD Athlon X2 4800+
2GB of DDR2 800 Ram
x2 160GB 16meg cache Western Digital Raid Hard Drives
I am going to run the Hard Drives Software Raid 1
I am checking out colocation from 2 places both places are 1000GB a month transfer. :2guns: I should have the parts friday and have the server up and running and colocated the following week.
Just 1/3 of a server right now. I should be on my own by next year at this time

How much do they charge for that 1k GB?
Then again I imagine that comes without management since it is custom built so that counts me out
Well its budget colocation so its $50 a month. I am trying to contact another budget colocation provider to compare prices and get the best deal. I am sure once my websites get busy I am going to soar past 1000GB per month.
Edit: its pretty easy to manage a server once you learn how. But if something goes wrong its your job to fix it. Thats the only down fall. 99.99% of the time if you have a problem that you cant figure out you can google it.
I left The Planet and don't recommend anyone else use them. Two years with a dedicated server and when I needed to make some changes they virtually ignored my requests, every response was just another sales pitch that ignored my needs entirely, then after three cancellation requests they still billed me two months in a row and refused to refund my $320. The Planet can rot for all I care. Please don't support their cause. I'm a very reasonable guy and I gave them every chance to keep me as a customer and subsequently at least make me a happy ex-customer. At least in my case, they simply didn't give a crap. VERY DISSAPOINTED.
HostForWeb has been my favorite for over 4 years now. I also use Quantact VDS which are affordable but memory limits could be better.

3 dedicated servers. all fully managed. 2 with liquid web.
liquid web is awesome. they have done a lot of work for me. going to move my 3rd to liquid web in the coming months. :-)
If you want to have a successful online business then you need your site to be up all the time. There are many hosting companies that have email support or phone support that takes about 2 hours before you get through to them or just get an email back from them if not 24 hours.
With Liquid web, they have 24/7 phone support where they always answer the phone within a minute or so. I have never been put on hold or have had to phone them back. I have always managed to get things resolved within minutes and 1 a few hours at the most.
Liquidweb are the best hosting company I now of so far with their good support and uptime.
I only have one dedicated, managed server and hopefully this will be good enough to run my site, I would hate to think that I might need more than one server!
So far I have my main site, a phpbb forum and a php link directory on the one server.
If needed I could move the link directory as it is on a sub domain and so that would be relatively easy.
I'm not really well clued up on servers etc
I'm running a dedicated Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 2 2.0GHz Xeon Dual-Core Processors with 4GB Memory and 2 500GB Hard Drives. It's a beast. Fully managed, preconfigured for clustering, and more. I couldn't ask for a better machine.
It'll put a dent in your wallet at $817/month...if any of you were wondering.
No offence but past experience, ThePlanet have the worst support system ever. All my servers are currently with HostGator (a reseller I know, but 50 x better support than ThePlanet).
