One of the best hosts out there would have to be SoftLayer.

If you're looking to just start off and want something cheap, I'd go with a shared hosting environment. I personally user www.inmotionhosting.com. They give good bang for the buck and have great turn around on support time.

If you have some additional money and are semi-serious about the business you may want to look at a VPS (virtual private server) service. You'll be able to get root access which is key to installing all the tools you need. Also you'll typically be able to manage unlimited domains for your blackhat tricks

People in the know will usually recommend www.servint.com, www.powervps.com, www.liquidweb.com, or www.knownhost.com.

For managed dedicated servers the www.servint.com has got a lot of experience behind them.

I've read that they are one of the best dedicated server providers. If I made a good amount of money a month and ran anything that required use of a dedicated server, they'd be my first choice.

I personally LOVE Liquidweb's standard VPS solution.

It's 200 gb a month, 20 GB of space, unlimited domains etc.. I just love the feel of managing my own server. I get a new website up and running online for 15 bucks register at godaddy within 20 minutes

Actually, like Dave said its up pretty much immidiately, I just said it takes 20 min to register the domain / unlock it / set the name servers / create the account on my server etc... But as far as DNS updating, yea, it's immediate.

I have had about 7 sites on liquid web VPS for over a month and have never ever experienced any downtown. Their tech support is there 24/7, and their servers are 100% managed out of the gate with no extra "advanced monitoring fees" or any crap like that. The few problems I had (because I didnt know what I was doing) was fixed with a phone call by their tech quickly.

I honestly dont see any downside to them. You would be hard pressed to find a service like that for cheaper, so I wouldnt say anything is wrong with their prices. You get what you pay for.

It can take 24-48 hours to update an existing domain. That is because the record has an expiration timer. 24-48 is standard propogation time. However, you can change that timer and speed things up. This is a little trick you can do to make sure your new record doesn't take up to 48 hours to get out there when changing hosts.

When you register a new domain that has no DNS records, your DNS goes to the root servers to find it. As long as they have picked it up, you can see it. I do this all the time. Register a domain and see it in less than an hour.
