Alright I recently got two stories on the netscape which sent my users online skyrocketing and my server bit the dust. What was the server having issue with trying to serve that thread to the guest? What kind of specs on the new server would I need to take special note in to make sure that it stays alive and runs smooth?

Should I focus on my processor power, ram or harddrive?

http://www.servermatrix.com/ Those servers are in my price range.. If I chalked up the money for the Dual Xenon would the 1GB hold me back? Is that what caused the server to crash this time? My current server specs are Pentium 4 2.0, 1GB ram and 80 GB IDE harddrive

It really depends, How much bandwith and how much diskspace are they using or they are using too much CPU resources?

Let us know for which one of your site do you need a server? If it's mustang forums then I would say the server you are getting should you back.

Don't forget to optimize your server to make sure you get most of it!

I would agree, it's not the box, it's the application that is being served.

optimize and compress your delivery.

Impossible to say what the bottleneck is without seeing the stats, but for a high traffic site I'd always go with SCSI disks and as much RAM as you can afford.

Processor speed is unlikely to be the bottleneck.

A dual would be good - with lots of RAM..2GB min.
In httpd.conf - turn off Keep Alive - and turn off CustomLogs..

Just because it works for you it might not work for him

Bama, there are tons of things you can do to improve your server, however I'd say its time for an upgrade. Possibly if you can't affford a single dual you might want to go for two single processor setups. If you've already got something let us know!

Realisticly the default apache config works very well, once you get to the point it doesn't you need to consider bringing in non apache servers to help if you are locked into a control panel.

Well I have decided to move to the ultimate one here: http://www.servint.com/vps/

Mike on here uses them and he survived his netscape mainpage without any hiccups. It should do me fine for the time being. My current server handles the normal traffic ok... it was just pushed to the edge by the netscape mainpage.

Yep, 3 different sites all with a netscape mainpage at the same time.

I would have suggested http://www.softlayer.com/product.html - and buy an extra gig of ram if the server starts to slow

RAM is usually a big factor, swapping and hence reading disk starts the spiral
