Managed dedicated hosting provider

I'm looking for a managed dedicated hosting provider. I need a reliable company who can support Cpanel/WHM and Ruby on Rails installation/configuration if possible.

I've looked at The Planet and a few others, but would like opinions.

I currently have a server at EV1 and while they're great, I just don't have time or desire to manage the darned thing.

My budget is $500-600/month and a year contract would be fine.

I need at least 2GB RAM, 500 GB Transfer, SATA or SCSI drives and a decent support plan.

Any recommendations?

The two places I would recommend for managed dedicated servers are The Planet and Pair.

Pair is pricey but really do have fanatical support.

The Planet. Well they have rocked for a long time. If you are with EV1 though, you're now with The Planet since they just bought them out.

Hey, I forgot about that. I wonder if I could just get a support plan for my current server.

EV1 doesn't really offer support other than a reboot or SLA level stuff. I'll have to check into that. .Thanks!

He said managed.

For managed with a $500-600 budget, you probably can't beat www.rackspace.com and www.servint.com

whhooops, my bad.

They are 'unmanaged' but for the most part, i can't see why you would need a managed solution after the inital setup.

there are plenty of people here and other places who can help you (probably even for free) if you need help installing something on your server.

If you want managed, talk to PowerVPS aka Defender Hosting. Their Server Admins are top notch and know what they are doing. Not to mention they are in the Equinox Virginia Datacenter, one of the best in the country.

They have a really cool server offering that is not public on their website. You get a full dedicated server with Virtuozzo. You may wonder why that is important. Well, with Virtuozzo running on top of your hardware, they can move you to another box should something go drasticly wrong. It also means you can rebuild your whole server from scratch should you decide too. Then there is the back up systems in place.

Anyway, talk to a Sales rep and let them know what you are looking for. I can't say enough good things about them.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I can't touch Rackspace's prices wtih $600/month. They just quoted me $1100/month for a pretty basic setup!

Because I want periodic security audits, hardening, monitoring, automatic updating of software, kernels, etc. All the things I currently do but don't have time or the desire to do anymore.

But I don't have $1200/month to throw at Rackspace either... so I'll probably be compromising a bit.

I had servers in the past with ServInt - it is not a true "managed" service or at least what I had wasn't.

TurnKeyInternet.net Adam is the owner and an awesome guy. A smaller company, but they are very good at what they do.
