hi,

i, like many of you, have a million and one passwords in your head.

how do you keep track of them all?

my self i have a kinda formula in my head to work out passwords correctly for every site.

when it comes to user names it really hit and miss, on getting the one you you want.

i know its simple to write things down on a piece of paper then keep it close by, but my work space is very un tiday and it just doesnt work.

how do you do it?

I have the root password to my server wrote down on a piece of paper which is pinned to my noticeboard. My websites passwords are all the same, just basically random letters and numbers which I have memorised.

you shouldnt really write down your usernames and passwords just use your head! or store them in a digital safe! i normally use 3 letters, 6 numbers, and 4 non alphanumeric characters in passwords if there for something that needs to be secure like my server or laptop.

it's all in the head. And it doesn't matter if you forgot them. You can always hit the "forgot password" link. It'll just be sent in your email (I sure hope you know your email password).

Not if it's your root password to your server. It's much more complicated

Yeah I have about 3-4 different passwords for nearly everything...and if one doesn't work, just try the other two

Theres also about 3-4 different usernames

Except paypal, and my hosting, I just mashed the keyboard to figure those ones out and they're on paper :P

For my everyday sites I have three alphanumeric random eight character passwords.

For my extreme security I have a 24 character randomly generated alphanumeric password.

I don't write them down or store them anywhere... Just use my brain

I use RoboForm to remember my passwords for forums and other websites. For important websites like PayPal, I don't save the password, I just remember it.

I got around 10 passwords that I use for forums and the likes, so that's always a lot of fun trying to find out which one I used on a specific site. For important accounts, like Paypal, eBay, email, hosting etc. I usually just generate one randomly and put it in my little safe.

I use made up words with horrid combinations like Th15isMyPa55w0r] and make a note of the one or two characters. Pretty secure but unfortunately I also have a memory like a sieve. The days I've sat in from of a terminal cussing as I try all the variations...

Took me a onto to get back into Network Solutions once

Lol, if we work from home, I think writing down usernames and pws are ok. For me, I'll never tell, they are all in my brain.

I use a random password generator extension for Firefox to generate most of my passwords. It's handy because it calculates your password based on a master password and the current domain. I changed to this after I realized having one password for everything pretty much sucks.

I use KeePass (http://keepass.sourceforge.net) to remember passwords. It is opensource and free. Just written an introduction to KeePass.

For each site I just generate a random password with KeePass and use the keystokes to auto fill the username and password.
