So I just got a new server together. I guess they left my root password on a text file on the server.

I have an SSH login, and I'm able to see the text file there along with mny public_html directory... but how do i pull that file off?

I am using putty. is there a better option?

hmmm not quite sure what you are asking. What are you getting exactly again? You want to look at the text file or download it?

To look at it type: vi textfile.name

To download it mv textfile.name /home/sitefolder/public_html/ and then type in url to the file

'rm file.txt' to get rid of the file.

'cat file.txt' to view it

or if you want to edit it, you can use vi. make sure you know the vi commands to save/edit/delete/replace/etc.

Why? What's so bad about vim?

The learning curve for vi is a bit steep but once you know it it really becomes useful. Nano and pico are good for new users though.

WinSCP3 is the best SSH client in my opinion. It looks and feels just like Filezilla and the drag and drop interface is simply awesome.

Yes. It even has a great right click and edit feature. WinSCP3 is great for saving time and getting great control over your files easily

vim has done nothing but agrovate me since day one, I've tried reading the docs on how to use it and tried using it. But it never seems to function the way I want it to or I'd expect it to from the documentation.

if he is a newbie .. he should start with pico/nano .. it's normal! if he doesn't know to view a file it's stupid to put him use vi(m)/(x)emacs...

Depending on the server its not always vim, nano or whatever else you use to view files.. For example, on my server its nano.. on my other server its vim.
