Use randomly secure generated passwords to start. Also what are you running? cPanel?

Well if you have only HTML your site will be rather secure. What is your site going to be, and what resources are you going to use (LAMP for example)

Of course, that's only the tip of the ice berg. If a file doesn't have the right permissions, another account on your shared server might be able to replace it. There are all kinds of ways hackers take out web sites. Using a particular technology and not thinking about the question again is a false sense of security.

So it'll be on a Windows machine? With PHP you need to be careful if you people do file uploads:
http://www.webcheatsheet.com/PHP/file_upload.php
With mysql, have you ever heard of mysql injection?
http://www.tizag.com/mysqlTutorial/m...-injection.php
With any server make sure to check out any program (such as PHP) before you install it. With a windows server you have the issue of it being Windows, which is what the majority of malicious software is made for, so it can get a virus just like any other MS machine. A linux server can still get some but are less likely to, but should still protect your users with something like:
http://www.clamav.net/
A windows machine meanwhile should have more than that like:
http://www.kaspersky.com/anti-virus_windows_server
Read up on sanitizing input:
http://www.codeassembly.com/How-to-s...our-php-input/
Read this:
http://www.webmaster-talk.com/php-fo...rials-how.html
That's all I can think of right now. Pretty much remember, anyone who visits your site is a hacker.

Use secure passwords (change them often) and keep all software on your server up to date, including PHP and scripts.

Don't install things there that you won't use.

By the way, you're not using Linux? Then what are you using? cPanel isn't available for Windows yet (I think it's coming out in beta soon, though). You're obviously using some flavor of Unix, and it's probably Linux (CentOS, maybe?)

1. Use mod_security
2. Use mod_evasive
3. Use iptables for intruders
4. I like Logwatch

I think there will be a nice article in WMT's article section in a few weeks about additional security measures that can be taken.

CentOS is actually not what most people refer to as Linux, (GNU/Linux) since it'd based off the Redhat set. He also may be using BSD. There is only one current OS that is a flavor of Unix, Mac OS. They use the Unix Kernel.
If he's using Ubuntu Hardy Heron and doesn't realize it's Linux then he'd actually want to use UFW not iptables.
