Hello,
I have a number of dedicated servers hosted at a collocation facility that run server websites my group publishes. We are looking now at putting together our first server dedicated to storing user data (primarily images) in the range of 4-8 terabytes mirrored capacity.
Please share your configurations and experience with dedicated storage servers. I am looking for an all open-source solution and for the most part lower end off the shelf hardware components.
The questions I'm trying to answer:
- What software stack will provide the best performance for working with a large number of small files?
- How much CPU power and memory would be needed to avoid a bottleneck?
- Software or hardware RAID?
- Any other hardware considerations? RAID card?
