Sub domain to sub folder DNS help!

Hi guys,

I came across this problem...

How do I use DNS configurations to point a sub-domain to the main-domain's sub-folder?

Right now, the sub-domain is going to its own account, instead of going to a folder within the main-account.

WHM (cPanel) has this option and can be setup automatically, but Plesk doesn't seem to have it. It requires me to manually configure the DNS which I have no idea how to...

Please help!

Thanks!

DNS can only point to an IP or Alias (CNAME). It cannot resolve to a folder within another site.

That would need to be done within your hosting setup on Plesk and you would point the subdomain to the physical subfolder.

In cPanel, subdomain is just an masked alias that goes to a folder inside the main domain's "public_html",
but in Plesk, subdomain is an actual account in which has its own "mail", "stats", "config", and its own "httpdocs".

I have also checked both websites' DNS zones.
In cPanel, the main domain will have a line for the subdomain:
"www.subdomain / A / xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"

In Plesk, it'd have:
"subdomain.domain.com / A / xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"

I wonder, if there's anyway that in Plesk, the subdomain is just a simple alias that short-cuts to a folder, instead of an entire account.

cPanel:

Plesk:

I have contacted Media Temple but so far I'm still waiting for an answer.....

When you start the subdomain creation you can choose from Physical hosting or Subdomain on subfolder.

You have the Physical hosting selected rather than Subfolder

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm having the exact same problem and I was wondering if anyone found a resolution.

I used to have a cpanel based hosing account where I had set up a subdomain for file storage...

http://files.domain.com

...that in reality was an alias to...

http://www.domain.com/files/

As the original poster indicated, Plesk makes you set up a whole new account for a subdomain, which is less than optimal for what I'm doing.

Not necessarily

When you create the subdomain select "Subdomain on subfolder" -> Ok
on the next page you can let plesk create a new folder or you can type in the name of an existing folder.

ONLY if you have "Physical Hosting" selected does it create a new account.

Unless I'm missing something, I think you're wrong. Please look at the screenshot posted by tomazws above. There's no option for "Subdomain on subfolder" in Plesk.

You are absolutely right! On both counts.

HOWEVER the options for how and where to create the physical presence for the subdomain are on the previous page in the setup procedure.

There is no previous page in the setup procedure for me. I click on the "Subdomains" icon, then on the "Add new Subdomain" icon and it takes me directly in the screen in the screenshot above. I'm never given a choice for "subdomain on subfolder" at any time in the process.

Maybe it's a Plesk version thing. I'm running Plesk 8.6.0.

Hmm?

I have 8.6 on one server and 8.3 on another both do exactly the same

8.6 screenshot subs-plesk-8-6.jpg

Maybe it's a Windows/*nix difference.

Yep I'm looking at the same frustration here. I have a Virtual Server and want to install an application (DotNetNuke), with Plesk managing the DNS. I'm even trying to make it harder on myself by trying to get the main (host) DNN installed as a subdomain to my primary (dnn.mymaindomain.com). In Plesk, while trying to select the actual folder for the alias, it just won't accept it. Now I'm digging deep because I really want this to work, next I'll try setting up a folder that Plesk will accept under vhosts and then (because I have access to the actual FILE) try editing it in a text editor to redirect where I want it to.

hey singdeep, I've got the same issue and would love to hear if you solved it. Seems to be a difference between unix/win servers. Or is it a plesk version thing? I have plesk 8.6.0.

My friend has plesk 8.2 on a win server and does have the option to point a subdomain to a subfolder.

i RTFM. and found this. Server admin isn't my MO so i don't really even understand it but is this helpful or a possible solution?
I didn't find much else that was useful in the documentation.

Ok. so i sorted out my problem. i was trying to add an app to the subdomain (same as singdeep). I went in to see if maybe there was an option when setting up a new app. and there it is!! when installing an app you can select either the domain or a subdomain. Solved my problem, but i guess maybe not what the original poster's issue was.
