Is there a script or a code in the meta tag that will tell a search engine not to index a certain page?

Use a robots.txt in your main directory

E.g.

Code:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /_borders/
Disallow: /_derived/
Disallow: /_fpclass/
Disallow: /projects/
Disallow: /_private/
Disallow: /_themes/
Disallow: /_vti_bin/
Disallow: /_vti_cnf/
Disallow: /_vti_log/
Disallow: /_vti_map/
Disallow: /_vti_pvt/
Disallow: /_vti_txt/

I think:
HTML Code:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow" />
Works for all the main search engines.

Wouldn´t this tell the SE´s not to index anything at all?
For a certain page vivid´s is the way to go.

Just an advice. If you want sensitiv data or files not to be indexed don´t rely on the noindex metatag.
I.e. Alexa´s bots don´t follow this rule and spider the complete site. Some of the minor SE bots show the same behaviour.

Wrong way around.
The meta robots element will only apply to the page it is on

the robots.txt solution presented will exclude entire folders NOT individual pages.
