I need to connect to my website using IIS 6.0 (for vista) which I downloaded recently from Microsoft website. I tried different methods : "connect to a server" and "connect to a site", but I still cannot connect to my site.

The ERROR I get: "Could not connect to the specified computer. Details: Unable to connect to the remote server. "

However, when using FileZilla or Microsoft FTP explorer I can easily connect to my site.

What is the problem, please HELP!

PS I need to connect through IIS in order to complete my IIS 301 redirect.

are you trying to run your website on your local machine?

Or something else?

No, I'm not trying to run it on my local machine. But, all the tutorials I saw so far on the 301 redirect for Windows IIS 6.0 recommend to use that IIS Manager which is integrated in Vista.

How else do you do it? ? ?

PS Sorry if I keep asking the same questions over and over again but I really want to get it ))

Vista runs IIS 7. Version 6 was Windows Server 2003.

Ok the mists are clearing.

The IIS Management console IS installed on Vista if IIS is installed BUT it's the IIS Management on the server you need to use to add redirects to your website.

Anything you do with the IIS MMC on your machine only affects the IIS installation that is on your machine.

To start the process open the IIS snap-in from;
Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Services Manager
or
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Services Manager.

I CANNOT connect to my site using Internet Services Manager (7) it gives me the error I posted in the first post.

What to do?

One question;

do you have access to the server?

either console or terminal services / remote desktop

So no direct access to the server then.

next question:

What do you need to redirect?

Well, I need to redirect all the pages on my site (old versions) to new pages on the same domain.

Thanks for quick response.

Not a problem then;

What control panel do you have for the site and can you set up custom error pages?

Yes, I have that GoDaddy control panel, total DNS control it is called I guess.
I saw the option there to change 404 pages.

How do you do these redirects though?

I went to my GoDaddy account again, but could not find the way to redirect pages. They only have "forward" option for the entire site...
I emailed them, but they say "you do it with html code, look it up on the web"...

Do you have a list of the existing pages you need to redirect and their new counterparts?

Are there any common features about the existing pages?

Don't worry about it, GoDaddy's "technical help" isn't either in my experience, I honestly wouldn't recommend my worst enemy to host with them.

Well, I will make the list when I find out how to do the redirects. The new pages are exactly the same as old ones, but the menus, header, layout, links, graphics are different. Also, new pages have completely different names and locations, since I put different categories of pages into separate folders. I have not uploaded any of the new pages to the server yet. But the website is completely done on my local PC.

I do it all the time BUT you need direct server access to redirect individual documents and folders.

Provided you have a document pairing list it gets simpler from here onwards.

How much programming experience have you got with asp vbScript?

this is so I know whether to point you to another forum post where I documented the code or I just write you the base code and you then populate a few variables.
