Yes, I've heard that alot of SMF forum owners have the problem of spamming, the best way to deal with them is IP bann them and sooner or later it will stop.

The can get around the captch stuff now, u need extra mods to solve this, the best mod ive found is one where no one can post links until they have posted so many times (15 times), its very effective because most spammers just want to post and run, its a mod with my vbulletin not sure if you can find one similar for your forum though !

I use SMF. I was having the same trouble. I installed Stop Forum Spam mod from the customize > security > Stop Forum Spam link. This software was good for identifying spammers from a data base and then placed a notification in your "waiting approval" screen (of course you must select the "member approval" option on the registration screen). This mod simply told me which potential member is a spammer, it did not keep them from trying to register.

A mod that did keep the spam bots from even showing up to request registration was the Are You Human/Bot? mod from the customize > security > Are You Human/Bot? link. This mod requires them to answer a question. It has worked well for me. I use the 1.3 verson. The latest version would not install correctly on my theme.

Good luck
