Hi,

I would like to make a copy of my website, a backup I guess. Can someone suggest the best way to do this. I am told there is free software available for doing this. I think even if you are offline you can view the website, which would be handy for me.

If you are using Cpanel you can take backup of your home directory and database at once and for offline browser use www.httrack.com

It is better to take the backups from the control panels. Because they are easier to restore if required.

cPanel => Backups

if you are using Plesk, then you can configure the Backups at "backup Manager" and can save the backup at the on the server backup repository or on a remote ftp server.

if you're doing it from shell issue this command in the root directory:

tar cvf backup.tar.gz
