Hello I am trying to make my own comic website and I want to know how does site like Penny-Arcade.com, cad-comic.com make their Url links like "cad-comic.com/cad" automatically link to a comic page instead of a specific link like "cad-comic.com/cad.html".

I know there are probably many methods of doing this but what is their method for doing this?

Some info that might help is that i'm hosting my site on a windows server on godaddy.

Thank you for your time.

No idea.
No way anyone could tell without access to their server.

Then you probably have no choice at all in the matter.

On www.modtalk.co.uk/ I use a system I wrote myself using a scripted 404 page. It makes no difference fo SEs BTW, I merely wrote it to prove it could be done.

There are some components which you will NOT be able to install, so your only option is to create a folder and an index page for each entry.

AND while I think on:

Which would you be able to tell people over a telephone?

Customer:
Quote:
"and the address where I can to buy this"?
Sales staff:
Quote:
"Ah yes, It's, www dot site dot com forward slash product dot asp question mark p r o d i d equals three nine eight"
OR

Customer:
Quote:
"and the address where I can to buy this"?
Sales staff:
Quote:
"Ah yes, It's, www dot site dot com forward slash product forward slash shiny dash green dash kettle dash with dash whistle dash lid forward slash
customer:
Quote:
Sorry could you repeat that please
... ... and so on.

You can do this using htaccess if you have PHP Linux web server.

Otherwise you can create folder and then put index.htm file in it
So xxx.com/folder/index.htm would be accessible as xxx.com/folder

thank you for all the replies.

After looking through the faqs on godaddy, I found out that i have no choice but to use the microsoft rewrite module since i'm hosting it on their windows server. I tried looking at the documentation but its very confusing.

Does anybody know how to use it? An example of the the code for the web.config file would be nice - like how it would look like if i want to rewrite a url "www.lolhilarious.com/comic/20100103" to "www.lolhilarious.com/comic/20100103.html".

I was also wondering since comic sites have so many comics. Do they make an html file for every comic or do they make a php file that outputs a html file with the appropriate comic jpeg depending on the parameters typed in the url?

Who knows??

They may use a CMS that creates folders and files.

They may be using a server that supports URL rewriting.

They may use a CMS that can FTP files to a remote server.

They may not use a CMS, but create the files individually.
