Recently I have been experiencing problems with my ftp client and how it views files online as well as how it downloads files.

When downloading (for the purpose of backups), it copies across the file hierachy including folders, file names and file types, however each file has a size of 0kb. I'd imagine this is an issue with the settings applied to the client but am stuck as to how to rectify it. What changes are necessary to ensure I get the full content when downloading?

Also, on initial boot up the client will not display all files. I have to revent back a level and then reenter the folder before it will display the full content.

The program being used is CoffeeCup FTP which I have used various versions of in the past with success. If someone can offer any advice it would be appreciated.

Apologies for the no doubt stupid question but it's got me stumped!

Try a different FTP client FileZilla for example

Thanks for that. I have downloaded Filezilla but I'm assuming I've come across it before as once installed it defaulted with my server details.

Having said that, it now won't display all files loaded to the server. The downloads now work fine, but I can't see all files on the server so it is a little redundant.

Any suggestions as to what is going wrong? Connection method? I can see all files when I go into the admin control panel and view from the file manager- just not through FTP.

Ok process of elimination at work.

the problem is now pretty much limited to the ftp username not having correct permissions by the sound of it.

Is this a *nix or a Windows server?

Linux, I believe.

If it were a permissions issue- wouldn't that limit me from viewing all user uploaded files?

Further to that- on the using CoffeeCup I can view the files, but download doesn't work. Using the same log in but Filezilla, I can download but not view everything on the server.

It's most confusing!

What permissions are on the folders in question?

Sorry mate.

I've tried a few different times to find the permissions set against the folders but all I can find is the basic read, write, read-only check boxes.

Could you point me in the right direction? If I'm looking at Filezilla I can't even see the folders in order to check their permissions.

Use the control panel file manager to check the permissions, try setting them to 777 temporarily and see if that cures the problems.

Firstly thank you for your patience.

Where in the control panel should I go to check the permissions? Right clicking doesn't help. If I go to the edit option it lists the owner etc. but nothing about permissions.

I really do apologise for the silly questions.

OK.

The files are all set to 644. Looking further into it, I can't see anything I uploaded after ?/5/2006 in Filezilla. I'm assuming something happened after this time to change my file settings but where to begin looking?

No idea, I don't know what you are using.

644 means

owner: read and write permissions,
group: only read permissions,
others: only read permissions.

Have you tried using the same username and password as the control panel?

Parallels Pro if it helps.

Same username. It seems strange that it's not playing the game with files after mid 2006. I have sent a ticket to the support desk to get their input on the matter.

Thank you for all of your help.

Possibly a file "ownership" issue in that case.

This could be caused by a server move or upgrade that has recreated usernames etc but has not propagated the changes to file level.

It will need shell access to change ownership of the files & folders to allow you full access. Or ask your hosting technical support to change ownership.

By changing the transfer mode to passive I have solved most of my probems.

However, now attempting to download images, I get an error stating '550 SIZE not allowed in ASCII mode'. File permissions are set at 644. Transfer type is set to binary.

Can anyone assist?

Usually such problems are explained by the post i quoted from Chris. If you contact your host's support department be sure to mention the idea.

Here's the solution if they're a little iffy:
Code:
cd /home
chown username:username username
cd /home/username
chown -R username:username *
chown username:mail etc
chown username:nobody public_html
chown username:username .[a-zA-Z0-9_]*
chown username:nobody .htpasswds
Of course, the above commands are to be ran as root - by your host.
