BTW
This thread is bringing back memories of laying miles and miles of structured cabling then fitting and testing ends, dressing cables in racks etc etc
Boy am I glad I don't do that anymore
Amen to that.
My first job was electrician.
When I come in the developer business, each time there would be a need of cabling a new room, I was asked to do it.

Loosely twist the coloured pairs together from the sheath to the IDC terminal

I know that this thread is ages old, but this was practically the last thread that I posted in before I stopped becoming active here.

Just an update on my project:

I have ran over 1000FT of cable through my home, and invested in a nice gigabit switch. I can now transfer gigabytes of data between computers in seconds. I really appreciate all of the help that you both provided ( Chris, Tripy).

Cat6 and Cat5 are pretty much the same, Exept the EM shielding and the way the pairs are twisted in the jacket.

You can use cat5 and cat6 on the same network.

Cat6 will give better 1Gbit performance ( Distance will be longer ), However Cat5E will also do the same.

Decent Cat6 cables are capable of 10Gbit ( i use them )

( oops, Just noticed this was an old thread anyway... )

All i can say is... Well done! You evidently understood the problem and heeded the answers given to you.

Congratulations on installing a decent network

interesting, I use an Ubuntu server, and have it networked to all my pc's, I found nfs slow compared to samba.

But then again, I only use it mainly for hosting, so im only transferring a webpage over, which is usually about 5-10mb, but transfers are pretty much instant.

but I also keep a pile of movies on it, that I steam to the pcs, without any trouble using samba.

im using a link-sys router flashed with ddwrt

Edit - nm just noticed the dates on the original post lol
